Restoration of the facades of the building of the Prefecture of Fthiotida

The building of the Prefecture is located in the historic center of Lamia, on the north side of Eleftherias Square, on the corner with Ypsilantis Street. The building has two main construction phases. The construction of the central part was completed in 1928 and the addition to the western part was made in 1960. Respectively it has two different periods of use. From the beginning of their construction until 1955 it belonged to Ε.Τ.Ε. and from then until today belongs to the Prefecture of Fthiotida. Its floor plan is rectangular with general dimensions 20.00 x 31.00 m. The small side is located on the north-south axis and the large side is located on the east-west axis. In the southern part stands the propylon of the main entrance and in the north, the central part of the ground floor. It is developed on three levels and has some auxiliary spaces on the roof. The addition building in the northwest corner of the original building has four levels. On the north side of the plot there is a yard that has a metal fence towards Evangelistrias Street. On the west side of the building is used the free space for parking vehicles. The building has been designated a protected monument by the decision of the Ministry of Culture. no.333 / 10441 / 22-2-91 and the Government Gazette 132 / issue B / 8-3-91. The description states in more detail that: "the building of the Prefecture of Fthiotida in Lamia is characterized as a historical monument because it is a remarkable and representative example of architecture of the early century, characterized by majesty and admirable symmetry in its facades, etc. and that is why its involvement is of particular interest ". Its use in the various historical periods of the city as well as the damage to the southeast corner of the building, both to the bases and to the stairs resulting from the German bombing of 1941 are elements of preservation in the context of historical memory. It is a monument that contains important historical and artistic values and for which every effort should be made for its preservation and restoration. The building presents significant problems related to the deterioration of materials due to weather conditions, air pollution, use, inappropriate interventions and change of technologies and infrastructure. The goals of the interventions on the facades are the confrontation of the construction and aesthetic problems, the undoing as much as possible of the causes that caused them and finally its historical and aesthetic emergence.
