Restoration of an old Hoffmann kiln

Restoration of an old Hoffmann kiln

The building of the k;iln is located in Petroupoli, on the borders of the municipality towards Mount Poikilo. The installation of the kiln, the crusher and the quarry formed a unit for the processing and production of building materials (sand, gravel, lime and bricks). This area today is a supra-local center of cultural activities and leisure. The lime kiln is one of the few surviving Hoffmann type continuous combustion furnaces. It was owned by two Greeks from Crete named Tsidakis and Michalakis. They were also the owners of the lime kiln of Galatsi, which is known to have been built in 1933 by a German engineer and Greek craftsmen from Drama. The operation of the furnace is divided into two periods in relation to the type of combustion raw material. In the first period they used coal which the heaters threw from the roof through the supply holes (chimneys). After 1958 coal was replaced by oil. The "rooms" in which the combustion took place were now supplied with hot oil through injectors (injectors) that penetrated into the holes. Around 1970 the kiln stopped operating. The kiln is an industrial building - machine. Its shape and shape correspond to its mode of operation and its productive activity. It has a rectangular plan with semicircular ends on its small sides and fourteen arched openings that correspond to the underground air channels and the bells of the main air duct. Its external dimensions are 16.70x40.20. It is symmetrical about the length and width of the axis. The chimney is located on the longitudinal axis, southwest of the furnace and communicates with it through an underground air duct. The building suffers from significant structural problems. In the restoration proposal, the parts that have collapsed are reconstructed, the masonry is strengthened and a new roof is placed on the roof, the shape of which refers to older examples of kilns of this type. An exhibition on the history of stone mining in the area is installed inside the kiln.
