Nikotsara square regeneration

Nikotsara square regeneration

The intervention area is west of the ''Kamares' and is enclosed to the east by the monument of the Aqueduct and to the west by the building of the Courts. In the early 16th century, with the expansion of the urban fabric, the square was in a privileged position as it was crossed by the main axis of communication. Today it constitutes a node within a flowing system of successive outdoor spaces and roads. It was proposed to revive the commercial character it had a century ago with the weekly "bazaar". The floor is "woven" by strips of different materials in a grid at a pace similar to the Kamares. Wide zones of floors emerge through Kamares and are composed with the lines of continuity of the urban fabric. The two directions of the "weaving" are entangled in the central plateau where the tension increases. Small height surges translate the terrain that monitors the base of the Aqueduct. Thinner "threads" are pulled from the "fabric" a little higher. They make seating surfaces and stopping points. The system of engravings with the rule of "weaving" serves the hierarchy of dynamic flows that are already contained in the space and the intensity of the directions. The elongated continuous linear bands give impetus to the movement towards the center. On the contrary, the interruptions of the continuity in the central part of the square serve the deceleration.
