National Resistance Square regeneration

National Resistance Square regeneration

Ethnikis Antistaseos Square is the most central and most important square of Ilioupoli, both in terms of size and collateral functions and in terms of importance for the urban space of this municipality. The decision to pedestrianize the perimeter road of the square, the hierarchical signage of the entrances to it, but also the use of its adjacent spaces are the points that characterize the proposal, at least from its functional and traffic side. With these principles, we envisioned a pleasant meeting place and events that will be discharged from the movement of vehicles giving priority to pedestrians, unified with the functions on either side of the square. The intervention, aiming to preserve the microclimate if possible, seeks to create spatial units with qualities that compose particular "spatial paintings", which are partly imposed by both the intense topography and the existing situation, thus promoting functions that will characterize each intervention sub-area. The boundaries between these subareas are not strict, on the contrary they allow multiple flows of movements - functions between them. Thus, it is possible for the users to regain the public space and to highlight the area as a reference point for all citizens, with the direct consequence of its upgrading.
