Regeneration of Briskios Municipal Library of Gargaliana park

The Park of the Briskeion Municipal Library of Gargalianoi has an irregular, roughly trapezoidal shape. It is surrounded by Nikopoulou, Eleftherios Venizelos, Ermou, and Tellos Agras streets. The main design decisions of the study were, on one hand, the clear arrangement and separation of spatial units that were intended for different uses, and on the other hand, the appropriation of the space by the residents of Gargalianoi. The solution was based on the design of a diagonal thoroughfare as a continuation of the layout system of Kolokotroni Square and the redesign of the central unit - zone of the park, which had the character of an urban park. The diagonal pathway accommodates the daily movement of pedestrians to and from the Gargalianoi Gymnasium-Lyceum and leads to the central stopping area.
The central unit was reorganized by redrawing the flower beds following the symmetry axis of the library building. This design gesture resulted in the creation of a rectangular stopping area with the proportions of a square in the center of the park. On the northern side, parallel to Tellos Agras Street, another stopping area was organized, forming the second spatial unit of the park. This is a tree-planted triangular plateau created by the redrawing of the flower beds symmetrically along the axis of the building and a diagonal movement in continuation of the layout system of Kolokotroni Square. Here, the placement of kiosks and seating is planned to serve ephemeral uses such as the exhibition of local agricultural products, book fairs, etc.

The project participated in 2012 in the 7th European Biennale of Landscape Architecture in Barcelona.
