Restoration of the Girl's School of Pterounta, Lesvos

The object of the study was the restoration of the Girl's School of the community of Pterounta, Lesvos and the creation of a small museum. The building was built in 1899 at a time of economic prosperity for the community. The construction costs of the building came from donations of the Venidis and Koutlidis families. The operation of the school ceased in the mid-1960s. The entrance to the building is from the main road through a small courtyard. A staircase parallel to the building leads to the main staircase of the entrance. The wide staircase is covered with a propylon. In the cornerstones, in the pilasters, in the frames of the frames and in the cornice of the facade, a treated gray stone was used. The rest of the masonry was made of irregular volcanic stone (characteristic yellow-brown color) with careful grouting. The remaining facades did not use treated hard stones and were replaced by solid bricks or volcanic cornerstones. In some areas both the wooden fasteners and the wooden frames of the frames are visible. In the context of the creation of the museum, the collection and exhibition of small or large exhibits were proposed, such as: architectural members of churches, marble lintels of the demolished mosque, the abandoned press of the olive mill with the characteristic seal of the Isigoni factory, etc.
