Reconstruction of the wooden pavilion of the Faliro Nautical Club

The wooden pavilion of the Nautical Club of Neos Faliros was located on the beach of Neos Faliros in its current location between the Peace and Friendship Stadium and the Temple of Myrtidiotissa. It was built in 1905 (by the contractor Ioannis Mamais to the designs of the engineer A. Guinness) and was for years the center of the Nautical Club and a place where sports games took place, of the two miles that took place from Trocadero to the naval pavilion. In 1983 the first catastrophic fire broke out which saved the wooden bearing organism in a fairly good condition but destroyed all the morphological elements except those on the northeastern exterior. Subsequently, the building was characterized as a work of art according to law 1469/50 (decision 9 / 6.7.83.). After the second fire, the building suffered irreparable damage, which made it unrepairable. The pavilion was a special architectural specimen both because of its very careful construction and because of its morphological value. Its form referred to northern European models from where its design comes from and most likely the wooden elements of its construction (morphological elements art nouveau). The building was two-storey, with a stone base 11.45 x 12.90 m and a wooden floor with a central octagonal section. It was covered with a wooden roof covered with French tiles. The restoration proposal aims to preserve the original form of construction and use of the building. Given the risk of losing the original material that was preserved, surviving parts of the existing structure were collected (metal railings, wooden decorations), for their reuse or the reproduction of exact copies during the reconstruction. Only the stonework of the ground floor has been preserved in the area. Disassembly, sorting, cleaning and reuse were also proposed for this material.
