Landscaping of the surrounding area and the access road to the castle of Ypati

The study concerns the configuration of the area ending the road under reconstruction access to the Byzantine castle of Ypati. A small building is provided for the guard's office with toilets for visitors, viewing plateaus and car park. The castle is located at the end of a rocky peak that dominates over the settlement. On its south side, at the highest point of the fortifications. the characteristic construction of the preserved circular tower stands out. Southwest ends a rural road that is the main access to the archaeological site. The road ends in a small plateau that today allows the reversal of a vehicle and marginally the parking of a small number of vehicles. This naturally shaped plateau is located at the lowest point of the oselo that connects the rocky hill of the castle with the opposite hill. From this point there is the possibility of viewing both to the north, to the valley of Spercheion, and to the south, to the mountain range of Oiti. The configuration of the plateau before entering the archaeological site of the castle aims at creating an aesthetically upgraded and functionally differentiated space. The aim is to integrate the building serving visitors into the natural landscape and the environment of the monument with the minimum possible interventions. The smooth adaptation to the existing relief is made in parallel with the effortless connection with the configuration within the archaeological site. The building is adapted to the relief of the opposite hill. This placement ensures the overall view of the castle rock from the plateau just before the entrance to the archaeological site without the creation of "visual barriers". On the north and south side of the plateau, small levels are formed, accessible by a small number of stairs or ramps. In the wall that receives the slope, in the road parking area, a construction of signs with information is applied to inform visitors. The names of the city, during different historical periods, are made of oxidized sheet metal and placed at a short distance from the wall.
