Fastening and enhancement of the prison building and three neighboring buildings
The building complex on the island of Gyaros, a monument of special historical value, was built in the period 1947-1951 by the exiled political prisoners who were already there. It was implemented in the southernmost of the five bays used on the east coast. The central prison is a rectangular building with a total dimensions of 140x70m. developed in four levels. It is built on a ledge between two bays. A little further north, at a lower level, are the three ancillary buildings. They are rectangular in plan and in turn had the use of a warehouse, a power station and a hospital. All buildings have a stone foundation, a concrete structure and masonry made of exposed bricks. The prison building has a central traffic axis. In each level there are, two axes at the same time, symmetrically with respect to the axis. There was a separate traffic network for prisoners and guards. The prison building has serious construction problems due to so many failures that occurred during its construction but mainly due to its proximity to the sea. During the recording and documentation of the buildings, the useful objects, the inscriptions and the writings that were located in them were recorded at the same time.
