Municipal Clinics of the 5th Department of the Municipality of Athens

Municipal Clinics of the 5th Department of the Municipality of Athens

The building of the Municipal Clinics is located on the building block surrounded by Sarandaporou, Ziller, Skra and 28th of October streets. It has two sides, the south on Sarandaporou Street and the north on Skra Street. From the morphological elements of the facades and the materials that have been used, we estimate that the initial construction of the building took place between 1955-60. The load-bearing structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete. On the sides of the building towards the streets it is neat and symmetrical. In the central part where the stairwell and the skylights are located, the density changes and there is no symmetry. The masonry is made of bricks. The exterior (facades and partitions) and single streets of the partition walls and those of the skylights are battered. The faces are symmetrical and are organized in three zones horizontally and three axes vertically. On the floor, a central arc protrudes, accompanied on both sides by two small cantilevers. The view on Skra Street differs only at the point of entry. The windows have a decorative frame and a corresponding apron. Finally there is a cornice on the roof level. The railings of the cantilevers, security and the entrance door are made of iron and have an interesting morphological treatment. The building has neoclassical elements in the organization and morphology of its facades that have been implemented in a modern and abstract architectural way in accordance with the period in which it was built.
The aim of the study was to create a modern, efficient and innovative urban type of health center that will ensure the improvement of the provision of primary health care services. The following interventions were briefly planned for the improvement of the building installations :
  • Restructuring of spaces based on functional needs
  • Replacement of fixed equipment
  • Modernization of infrastructure
  • Strengthening the bearing organism
  • Energy upgrade of the shell
  • Ensuring access for the disabled
On the first level (semi-basement) there will be imaging laboratories and diagnostic laboratories. On the second level (elevated ground floor) the Emergency Department will operate together with relevant general practitioners. Finally, on the third level (first floor) the other clinics will operate and the administrative premises will be located.
