Restoration of the facades of the Naval Retirement Fund building

Restoration of the facades of the Naval Retirement Fund building

The Palace of the Naval Retirement Fund is one of the most important public buildings of Piraeus. It has been characterized as a work of art according to Government Gazette 1125 / 20-12-1978 by the Ministry of Culture. It was built between 1927-30. Its architect was N. Zoumboulidis, head of the technical service of the National Bank during the period 1925-1938 and with projects such as the main building of the Bank of Greece on Aiolou Street and the Athens Stock Exchange. It was originally designed as a National Bank building. However, during its construction, with the establishment of the Bank of Greece in 1928, it was divided into two properties. Today it is divided into three properties as the National Bank has ceded the southern part of the building to the Naval Retirement Fund and kept only one semi-basement. It is an example of late classicism and is distinguished for its strict style that combines different classical architectural rhythms. The restoration proposal aimed to solve the structural, building and aesthetic problems of the exterior of the building in accordance with the restoration principles, so that its architecture could be highlighted.
