Restoration of the church of Agios Kirikos
Restoration of the church of Agios Kirikos
The Naidrium of Agios Kyrykos is located in the southern part of the settlement of Apiranthou Naxos, in the area of the same name "Ais Kyrkos". The church is stone-built, probably post-Byzantine, it belongs to the single-chamber arched type. It is semi-ruined and without an arch. The north side, part of the sanctuary and part of the west side are preserved. The object of the study is its complete restoration, i.e. the strengthening of the surviving part, the reconstruction of the arch and the perimeter walls, but also the removal of the inappropriate interventions made in 2005. In its initial phase, the arch of the temple was supported by two reinforcing arches . The possibly serious structural problems of the building led to a second construction phase, the construction of a second shell internally with a new arch, which no longer supported the original arch. The new shell continued in the alcove of the sanctuary, reducing its size compared to the original one. During this phase, while the external aspects were not affected, the style of the building was significantly altered internally, the reinforcing arches were covered, the sanctuary was reduced and the frescoes of the temple were covered. The third phase is not a new building phase but an attempt to restore the temple. During this phase, the inner shell of the second phase of the north wall was removed, which led to the revelation of the support pegs of the reinforcing arches as well as the frescoes. The second phase sanctuary was preserved and new masonry was constructed up to the height of the genesis of the arch, in the parts that had been demolished. Morphological elements are not preserved in the temple, but they probably did not exist. The only elements identified are the deacon's alcove, the protruding plate on the arches' support pegs in their seating position, and the skylight above the entrance lintel. The entry of rainwater from the collapse of the arch has led to the rapid deterioration of the preserved part of the temple. The structural problems of the building due to failures of the original construction led to the reinforcing intervention of the second phase which greatly altered the architecture of the temple. Subsequently, even this phase did not achieve its goal, i.e. avoiding the structural problems of the arch resulting in its collapse as well as that of the south wall. Aesthetic problems have mainly been caused by the ill-advised intervention in 2005, which did not restore the architecture of the building. According to the restoration proposal, the additions made during the intervention of 2005 are removed and the removal of the interventions of the second phase is completed, so that it returns to the original dimensions of its first construction phase. However, the alcove of the sanctuary of the second phase is preserved because it is a unique element of the post-Byzantine history of the monument. smeared and painted white. In order to highlight the temple, the wider area that surrounds it is shaped.
