Canopy between two buildings of a private clinic

Canopy between two buildings of a private clinic

The entrance canopy to the IASO Clinic was included in the intermediate empty space that had been created between the existing building of the maternity hospital and the new wing of the pediatric department. The canopy covered the pedestrian march between the two buildings. It has dimensions of 7.5m.x34m. In addition to the aesthetic and functional enhancement of the intermediate space of the buildings, the main objectives of the study were the signalling of the entrance of the building complex and the creation at a symbolic level of a reference point. The idea was based on the organization of a canvas where circulations, entrances and stops are intertwined, producing a three-dimensional grid materialized by transparent, translucent surfaces and linear metal elements. The canopy is developed in the intermediate space of the two buildings in the form of a "gallery" that communicates with the environment as it "opens" or "closes" by filtering the entry of natural light during the summer period and limiting the intensity of the north wind. The bearing organism is born at the same time as the central idea of the composition. The bearing elements are displayed and immediately understood. The transparency of the extended glass roof and the adjacent surfaces protects from the weather conditions and allows the penetration of plenty of natural light, ensuring conditions of covered outdoor space and not a closed corridor.

The project participated in 2006 in the 5th Panhellenic Exhibition of Architectural Work in Patras, and in 2007 in the 5th Biennale of Young Greek Architects.
