Restoration of the Aslan Pasha Mosque

Restoration of the Aslan Pasha Mosque

The Aslan Pasha Mosque was one of the most important mosques in the city of Ioannina. According to tradition, it was built in the place where there was the church of Agios Ioannou. Then the additional buildings of the hearth and seminary were built. With the construction of the library building, the mosque acquired the form of an integrated religious-educational institution. South of the mosque there were three tombs (türbe), one of which is preserved to this day. In 1933, the Municipal Museum of Ioannina was housed in the building and remains there to this day. The mosque of Aslan Pasha caused a great impression from the first period of its construction and continues until this day. It has been recorded in many photographs and postcards and has consisted the benchmark of the city. Although it was building that it’s form and it’s usage was refering to a different religion , it became a symbol of the city of Ioannina. In the context of the restoration study, important operations are carried out to deal with structural, building and aesthetic problems. The most important operation concerns the restoration of the coverings of the dome and the roofs. Finally, the electromechanical infrastructures are being upgraded and the accessibility of the disabled in the largest part of the monument is resolved.
