Restoration of the Kapodistrias Palace in Corfu

The Kapodistrias Mansion was built around 1832 on the site of an older palace of the family, from the Venetian period, on the coastal road to the port. The architect of the Kapodistrias Palace was I. Chronis. Later, the Mansion became the property of the Ionian State and was used as the residence of the President of the Ionian Senate, later it accomodated the Prefecture and finally the Center for Translation and Interpretation. Today it belongs to the Ionian University. The complex has an area of approximately 1500 m2 and consists of three independent buildings with an internal courtyard. The building of the Palace consists of five levels and an attic. Its general dimensions in plan are approximately 20x18 m. and its total height including the roofs is approximately 22 m. The monument is designated by the Ministry of Culture as one of the most important buildings of Corfu and a work of art while it constitutes a special example of Heptanisian architecture for its morphological quality and technical perfection. The restoration of the building aims to resolve issues of static support and repair the building damage as well as to deal with aesthetic problems. Obtaining its new use, it will house the Translation Department of the Ionian University. The respect for authenticity, the remarkable architectural elements of various eras and the use of traditional construction techniques were addressed together with the specifications of static adequacy, fire protection, energy saving and accessibility for all.
